The United Arab Emirates has declared a week-long holiday for the public sector to celebrate Eid Al Fitr in 2024, from Monday, April 8, until Sunday, April 14. This announcement from the UAE Cabinet means public sector employees will enjoy an extended break, resuming work on Monday, April 15. An announcement regarding the private sector's holiday schedule is anticipated shortly.
This year's holiday duration marks an extension compared to the previously announced four-day break for the public holiday. The timing of Eid Al Fitr, which signifies the end of Ramadan, varies globally due to the Islamic lunar calendar. Ramadan started on Monday, March 11, in Abu Dhabi, but the start dates differed across other countries.
Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Astronomy Society, noted in March that Islamic consensus anticipates Eid Al Fitr to be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. He highlighted a notable astronomical event where the Shawwal crescent's appearance, marking the end of Ramadan, coincides with a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. This alignment suggests the crescent could be visible after sunset on Tuesday in most parts of the Islamic world, indicating the start of Eid festivities.
Eid Al Fitr, known as the 'Holiday of Breaking the Fast,' is the first significant public holiday of 2024, eagerly awaited by residents for its celebration and the time off work it provides. Following Eid Al Fitr, the next public holiday, Eid Al Adha, is expected to offer a four-day weekend later in the year. A comprehensive list of UAE's expected public holidays for 2024 is available for those planning ahead.
