The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has initiated a public consultation program to tackle air quality and noise pollution across the emirate. This initiative aims to gather community input on policies and strategies to enhance residents' quality of life by addressing ambient and indoor air quality, noise levels, and odour concerns.
The consultation includes an extensive survey designed to gauge public awareness, experiences, and suggestions regarding these environmental challenges. To ensure inclusivity, feedback will be collected through online polls hosted on social media platforms and a series of in-person community consultation sessions.
Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, highlighted the value of public participation in shaping effective environmental policies. “Air quality significantly affects health and well-being,” she stated. “By incorporating community feedback, our policies will better address real-world challenges, fostering effective and widely accepted solutions.” Dr. Al Dhaheri added that the initiative encourages government entities to adopt strategies that directly address public concerns.
EAD monitors air quality and noise pollution through a network of over 20 stations, collecting more than 4 million data points annually. This data guides policy decisions and collaborative efforts, such as those with Abu Dhabi Public Health Center (ADPHC). Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji, Acting Director-General of ADPHC, emphasized that air quality is a crucial health determinant, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma or COPD.
The results of the consultation will be analyzed by EAD’s Policy Public Consultation team using thematic and sentiment analysis. These insights will inform future policies and be shared with government stakeholders to ensure public concerns are addressed.
This initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader goals of improving environmental sustainability and public health, aiming to create a healthier and more livable environment for all residents.
