The UAE has kicked off its annual ‘Planting Week’ with community-focused events in Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of planting to preserve and expand green spaces. This long-standing initiative also encourages the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and promotes community engagement in greening the nation.
In Fujairah, local school students participated in planting various native tree species in the UAE Flag yard area under the guidance of the Fujairah Environment Authority. The students received hands-on training in planting techniques and tree care to ensure the longevity of greenery in the area.
Meanwhile, a new park was inaugurated in Wadi Isfani, Ras Al Khaimah, in collaboration with the Public Services Department and Emirates Red Crescent. This event brought together local residents and students, showcasing the power of community in fostering environmental sustainability.
“‘Planting Week,’ launched over 40 years ago, has become a cornerstone of national efforts to promote agriculture, instill agricultural values, and highlight the pivotal role of municipalities,” the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) noted. This year’s initiative also launches the ‘Our Green Emirates’ program under the broader ‘Plant the Emirates’ National Programme, which includes events and competitions encouraging individuals, families, and institutions to take part in greening efforts.
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, stressed the importance of embedding planting into everyday life. “The ‘Our Green Emirates’ initiative calls on everyone in the UAE to embrace planting as a lifestyle, contributing to expanding our green spaces and deepening our connection with nature,” she said.
In the coming days, additional ‘Planting Week’ events will take place across the emirates. These activities will involve community members in planting local tree seedlings and will offer training on tree care and propagation techniques, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
